In December 2018, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by Nelson Mandela University.
In July 2018, Dr Judy Dlamini became the first woman to become the Chancellor of Wits University.
This position is ceremonial and voluntary and her term in office is six years, from 2018 to 2024.
In 2013, she completed the degree of Doctor of Business Leadership at the University of South Africa (UNISA).
Her thesis was titled “The Impact Of The Intersection Of Race, Gender And Class On Women CEOs’ Lived Experiences And Career Progression: Strategies for Gender Transformation at Leadership Level in Corporate South Africa” and it was supervised by Professor Peliwe Mnguni. In 2017, she converted her doctoral thesis into a book, “Equal But Different: Women Leaders’ Life Stories: Overcoming Race, Gender & Social Class”.
In 1985, Dr Judy Dlamini married her high school sweetheart, Sizwe Errol Nxasana.
They have known each other for over 45 years and have had two children together. Their son, Sifiso Nxasana (a Wits alumnus) passed away tragically in 2012. However, their daughter, Nkanyezi Makhari, is a Director at Sifiso Learning Group, a company through which the family owns several education brands. The company was named in honour of their late son, Sifiso.
